Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called on the international community to pressure Moscow into negotiations to end the war. Zelensky emphasized the power of diplomacy, stating, “This does not mean that all territories are reclaimed by force. I believe that the power of diplomacy can help.”
Challenges and Hopes in Working with Trump
Zelensky shared his thoughts on the potential re-election of Donald Trump as the U.S. president. He acknowledged that working with Trump would be challenging but affirmed Ukraine’s readiness for hard work: “Perhaps he truly does not understand what is happening in Ukraine, so we must work with the United States.”
The President also firmly responded to Trump’s claim that the war could be ended in 24 hours, stating that Ukraine would never agree to such terms and no country in the world could force it to do so.
Possible End to the War’s Active Phase
In his interview with the BBC, Zelensky expressed hope that the active phase of the war might end by the end of the year. He also stressed the need for the new British government to permit the use of Western weapons for strikes on recognized Russian territory without range limitations. This, he believes, will allow more effective resistance against the occupiers.
Future Plans
Zelensky does not rule out the possibility that he may not continue as president after the war. However, he emphasized that he would not leave his position until the war is over.
Planned Call with Trump
According to CNN, Zelensky plans to have a phone call with Trump. This will be their first conversation since Trump left the White House. Discussions about the appropriate timing for the call have been ongoing, and schedules may change. This call takes place amid concerns in Europe about the former U.S. president’s policy toward Ukraine if he is re-elected.
