Viktor Orban, the Prime Minister of Hungary, is employing his “peaceful mission” as an attempt to shift Europe’s focus from discussing military support for Ukraine to peace negotiations. According to analysts at ISW, Orban has actively opposed and undermined the European Union’s efforts to provide military assistance to Ukraine. Now, as Hungary assumes the presidency of the EU Council, he is pushing his agenda more vigorously.

Peter Szijjarto, Hungary’s Foreign Minister, announced on his Facebook page his intention to initiate “peaceful steps” regarding Ukraine during Hungary’s first week of EU presidency. He emphasized that the next six months will be a “mission of peace” for the EU. Following this, Szijjarto released a video stating suspicions that during Orban’s visit to Moscow, there were many politicians who support war, criticizing the Prime Minister.

“These attacks do not deter or unsettle us. The mission of peace continues and even strengthens, so I urge European politicians who support war to prepare for challenges in the coming week,” Szijjarto said.

Meanwhile, Orban himself suggested that such “unexpected meetings” may continue in the future.

Analysts note that this approach could cause a rift in the united EU support for Ukraine, aimed at halting Russian aggression and safeguarding European security.
