Amidst the mysterious delay in the United States’ provision of military aid to Ukraine, dissatisfaction is not only growing in Kiev but also stirring concerns across other continents. According to The New York Times, an unexpected participant has joined the ranks of nations urging Americans to cease their maneuvers in providing aid to Ukraine – Taiwan.
Inspired by the reliability of the United States in fulfilling its commitments, Taiwan believes that this could help deter China from aggression. Taiwan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Joseph Wu, stated that the US refusal to provide military support to Ukraine might assist China in amplifying its propaganda, convincing the world that Washington is an unreliable partner.
Wu added that if Russia manages to occupy a significant portion of Ukrainian territory, it could be perceived as a victory for authoritarian regimes. In such a scenario, observing the degradation of decision-making systems in the US, China might view this weakness as a success of Russia’s strategy of aggressive territorial expansion, serving as a model for emulation. Taiwan could become the next target.
These tumultuous events are causing unrest worldwide, prompting the international community to intensify efforts to secure peace and stability in the region. An essential component of this endeavor lies not only in political diplomatic decisions but also in timely and effective assistance to allies to maintain control over the situation.
