Talks between the US and Russia, held in Saudi Arabia, marked another attempt to find diplomatic solutions to the war in Ukraine. However, statements by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov underscored the Kremlin’s unyielding stance and its attempts to pressure the West.

Western Sanctions and the War: What Senator Rubio Said
US Senator Marco Rubio stated that in the event of a resolution to the conflict, the West would have to consider lifting sanctions against Russia. Such remarks have raised concerns in Ukraine, as any easing of sanctions pressure on the Kremlin could encourage further aggression.

Lavrov Denies Existence of a Peace Plan
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov claimed he had not seen any three-point peace plan, as previously reported by a Fox News journalist. However, he confirmed that consultations between the US and Russia regarding Ukraine would continue on a regular basis. Nevertheless, Lavrov’s rhetoric reveals the lack of any constructive position from the Kremlin: he even resorted to threats, stating that “Zelensky needs to be restrained.”

Key Statements by Lavrov Following the Talks
The meeting in Saudi Arabia allowed Moscow to once again broadcast its propaganda. Specifically, Lavrov made the following statements:

  • The US proposed a moratorium on attacks against energy infrastructure in Ukraine and Russia.
  • Russia categorically opposes the deployment of NATO troops in Ukraine, even under the flag of the EU or other states.
  • Moscow believes that the US “better understands” Russia’s position.
  • Russia and the US agreed to expedite the appointment of ambassadors.
  • Russia senses the “determination” of the US to move forward, Lavrov stated.

Chinese Companies Expanding into Occupied Ukrainian Territories
While the Kremlin attempts to engage in diplomatic negotiations with the West, China is ramping up its activities in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine. According to NV, private Chinese companies are actively entering regions of eastern Ukraine occupied by Russia. Chinese firms are building factories, supplying equipment, and providing goods for local businesses. This points to China’s economic expansion into the occupied territories and could have serious implications for Ukraine’s future recovery.
