Ukrainian filmmaker and military officer Oleg Sentsov has issued a stark warning to his country, urging both the government and Ukrainian citizens to prepare for a protracted war with Russia that could last up to a decade.
“We can no longer bury our heads in the sand,” Sentsov emphasized. “Initially, they spoke of two weeks, then two months, then two years. But now we have to realize that the war could drag on for ten years.”
Sentsov, a seasoned military officer who has firsthand experience fighting Russian forces in eastern Ukraine, believes that Ukraine’s victory hinges on a well-defined strategy and long-term preparation. “If we are prepared for a ten-year war, and it ends sooner, then we have done everything right,” he added.
The filmmaker advocates for a comprehensive mobilization of the nation’s resources. “All men should be ready for service. We need demobilization and rotation of troops. The economy should be placed on a war footing, investing funds in defense and production, not in asphalt and stadiums,” he stressed.
Context Matters
Sentsov’s dire predictions stem from his firsthand experience in the trenches of eastern Ukraine, where he has witnessed the ruthlessness and tenacity of the Russian aggressor.
Ongoing Aggression
It’s crucial to remember that Russia’s war against Ukraine has been raging for eight years, causing immense suffering and displacement. Thousands have been killed, and millions have been forced to flee their homes.
A Call to Action
Sentsov’s words serve not only as a warning but also as a clarion call to action. Every Ukrainian can contribute to their nation’s victory, from joining the ranks of the Ukrainian Armed Forces to volunteering or donating to support the war effort.
