Peace Talks on Ukraine: A Possible Breakthrough in 2025?

Columnist for The New York Times, Julian Barnes, has expressed the view that the war in Ukraine could end in 2025 through peace talks. According to him, such a scenario is possible regardless of the outcome of the U.S. presidential election. However, the victory of Donald Trump could significantly accelerate this process, as a Republican administration would likely propose a new approach to resolving the conflict.

Barnes emphasizes that both Ukraine and Russia are facing critical challenges. The Ukrainian army continues to demonstrate resilience but is gradually running out of reserves. Russia, in turn, is also suffering losses, both in manpower and equipment. Against this backdrop, the potential reduction in U.S. military aid due to Republican policies could weaken Kyiv’s position.

The key issue in potential negotiations will be providing security guarantees for Ukraine. Barnes believes that NATO membership for Ukraine remains unlikely at this point, but such guarantees could serve as a compromise. Trump, in turn, could use peace talks to boost his political image by offering economic integration between Ukraine and Europe on terms acceptable to the Kremlin.

Is the West Ready for Peacekeeping Missions?

Alongside discussions of peace talks, the idea of peacekeeping missions is gaining traction. Member of the Bundestag from the CDU, Roderich Kiesewetter, stated in an interview with Spiegel that Germany should begin planning its participation in such a mission now. He emphasized that this would send a clear signal to Moscow about the West’s readiness to defend the principles of international law.

“We are far from a peacekeeping mission, but planning needs to start now. This will also show Russia that its aggression will not go unpunished,” he said.

Kiesewetter also advocates for continued military support for Ukraine, including the supply of Taurus cruise missiles, which could significantly strengthen Ukraine’s defense capabilities.

Italy has also expressed readiness to participate in a potential peacekeeping mission. Defense Minister Guido Crosetto said that Italy has always been active in such missions and is prepared to demonstrate its competence in Ukraine. However, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani believes it is too early to discuss concrete steps. According to him, any peacekeeping initiative will only become possible after the cessation of hostilities.

Peace Talks and Peacekeeping Missions: A Possible Compromise?

The discussions surrounding peace talks and potential peacekeeping missions highlight the complexities of modern diplomacy. Western countries are seeking a balance between supporting Ukraine and avoiding a direct conflict with Russia. While the Kremlin uses any initiatives as a means to buy time, Ukraine is forced to fight not only on the battlefield but also in the diplomatic arena.

The war in Ukraine has already become a global challenge that affects not only Europe’s security but also the foundations of the international order. Resolving the conflict depends on the unity of the Western world and its willingness to support Ukraine both militarily and politically.
