The Russian military has once again showcased its brutality by executing nine Ukrainian prisoners of war in the Kursk region. This tragic incident occurred on October 10, near the settlement of Zeleny Shlyakh, according to the analytical portal DeepState. Reports indicate that Ukrainian fighters, believing themselves to be in relative safety, found themselves in direct combat with the enemy and had to return fire. However, due to a lack of ammunition, they were forced to surrender.
This incident marks yet another blatant violation of international humanitarian law, particularly the Geneva Conventions, which regulate the treatment of prisoners of war. Ukrainian Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets has appealed to the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross to investigate this war crime. He emphasized that the global community cannot ignore such acts of terror perpetrated by Russia. “Russia is a terrorist state that systematically violates all rules and customs of warfare,” Lubinets stated.
This brutality highlights the ongoing threat posed by Russian aggression to peace and security in Ukraine. The execution of prisoners of war is merely one of many crimes that demonstrate Russia’s complete disregard for international law. Such incidents must not go unpunished, and Ukraine continues to demand justice on the international stage.
The Russian Federation consistently breaches international norms during this war, and these cases remind us of the necessity for further pressure on the aggressor from the international community. Responsibility for war crimes must not only rest with the perpetrators but also with those who plan and authorize such actions at the leadership level.
