The new Slovak government has announced plans to initiate criminal investigations against former high-ranking officials for their support of Ukraine. This was reported by State Secretary of the Ministry of Defense of Slovakia, Igor Melicher, according to Reuters.
The move is prompted by the transfer of MiG-29 fighter jets and air defense systems to Ukraine. Melicher stated that the decision to transfer military equipment left Slovakia’s airspace unprotected and put its citizens at risk.
“Following this decision, Slovakia’s skies were left unprotected, and citizens were put at risk,” Melicher said. He also accused former Defense Minister Jaroslav Naď, who initiated the transfer, of betraying Slovakia’s interests.
In the spring of 2023, Slovakia transferred all 13 of its MiG-29 fighter jets, which had been decommissioned by the country’s Air Force, to Ukraine. In addition to the jets, the Slovak government also provided the Ukrainian Armed Forces with their only division of S-300PMU air defense systems, several outdated Kub air defense systems, 155mm Zuzana 2 wheeled self-propelled howitzers, BMP-1 infantry fighting vehicles, air-to-air missiles, various radar systems, and artillery ammunition.
The official transfer of military equipment was completed in April. At that time, the opposition sharply criticized the government’s decision, arguing that the interim government of Eduard Heger lacked the authority to transfer fighter jets to Ukraine, as it was a matter of fundamental foreign policy.
The context of Russian aggression added further significance to Slovakia’s actions. With the onset of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, many European countries began providing military assistance to Ukraine, understanding that Ukraine’s defense was a crucial element of Europe’s overall security. However, in Slovakia, this move sparked intense domestic debate, particularly among the political opposition.
This decision by the new Slovak government reflects a trend of increasing internal political strife and highlights the challenge of balancing national security with international commitments. Regardless of the outcome of the investigations, the situation in Slovakia underscores the importance of thoughtful and strategic decisions in defense policy, especially amid current geopolitical challenges.
