Minsk – July 15, 2024 – Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has announced the decision to withdraw Belarusian troops from the Ukrainian border, returning the deployed units to their permanent locations. This move is aimed at reducing tensions with Ukraine.
Lukashenko’s Statement and Ukraine’s Reaction
In his address, Lukashenko noted that after certain negotiations, the Ukrainian side also withdrew its troops from the border. “Following our efforts, the Ukrainians have pulled back their armed forces and additional troops that were moved to our border. They have withdrawn from the Belarusian-Ukrainian border zone. Currently, there are no complications with the Ukrainians, and I hope there won’t be any,” he stated.
Call for Negotiations
Lukashenko emphasized the need for dialogue between the countries, warning that the absence of talks would lead to an escalation of the conflict: “The main thing is to talk. If there is no dialogue, no conversation, it will escalate, and people will die… We are not enemies to the Ukrainians. I’ve said this many times. They are our people. Just like us, like the Russians. We need to reach an agreement as soon as possible.”
Context of Russian Aggression
Lukashenko’s decision appears to be an attempt to reduce regional tension, which has significantly increased since Russia’s aggression against Ukraine began in 2014. In recent years, Ukraine has been actively strengthening its borders, especially after Russia used Belarusian territory to invade Ukraine in 2022. Actions by Lukashenko, who is heavily influenced by the Kremlin, always raise concerns as Belarus has effectively become a staging ground for Russian aggression.
Prospects for Ukraine and the Region
The withdrawal of Belarusian troops from the Ukrainian border could indicate a shift in Kremlin tactics or an attempt to show a willingness to de-escalate tensions.
