Ukraine and Sweden are engaged in active negotiations concerning the potential delivery of Saab JAS-39 Gripen fighter jets to Kyiv. This was announced by Igor Zhovkva, Deputy Head of the President’s Office. In his statement, Zhovkva emphasized that this issue is consistently raised by President Volodymyr Zelensky in discussions with Swedish leadership.

“This is a topic that the president constantly brings up with the Swedish leadership. This was the case even before Sweden joined NATO. For understandable reasons, they were not ready to make any commitments at that time, as they were finalizing their accession to the Alliance. Now that Sweden is a NATO member, my president is again in talks with the Swedish Prime Minister, and our Ministry of Defense is engaging with the relevant Swedish authorities. These fighters are as good as the F-16s, and we are moving in this direction,” Zhovkva stated.

Context of Russian Aggression and the Importance of Fighter Jets for Ukraine

Ukraine has been grappling with Russian aggression for over a decade, which began with the annexation of Crimea in 2014 and continues today with military actions in Donbas. In light of this, Ukraine is actively working on modernizing its Armed Forces, and acquiring advanced fighter jets is crucial for national security.

The Saab JAS-39 Gripen is a multi-role fighter jet used by the Swedish Air Force and several other countries. Known for its agility, modern weapon systems, and ability to perform a variety of missions, from air combat to ground strikes, having such aircraft in the Ukrainian Armed Forces could significantly enhance the country’s defense capabilities.

Prospects of Cooperation and NATO Support

With Sweden’s accession to NATO, new opportunities have emerged for Ukraine to collaborate with the Alliance and its members. Previously, due to the process of joining NATO, Sweden was unable to provide clear commitments regarding military assistance. Now, as a full NATO member, negotiations on supplying Gripen fighters are becoming more concrete.

Ukraine has already received significant support from NATO countries in the form of weapons, training, and other aid. The potential supply of Saab JAS-39 Gripen jets would be a further step in strengthening the country’s defense and integrating into the NATO collective security framework.
