Czech Security Services Warn of Rising Russian Threats

In the Czech Republic, concerns are growing about the increasing threat of hybrid attacks from the Russian Federation. According to the latest report from the Czech National Center for Combating Organized Crime (NCOZ), Russia is actively working to influence the populations of Western European countries, including the Czech Republic. This influence involves recruiting and pressuring members of the diaspora, as well as the potential for sabotage against critical and transport infrastructure.

Information Warfare as a Tool of Influence

The NCOZ report highlights that information operations are being conducted in the Czech Republic, aimed at demoralizing public debates and spreading Russian narratives. This is part of a broader information war designed to halt the flow of material aid to Ukraine.

“Information operations conducted on our territory are aimed at gradually demoralizing public discourse to spread Russian narratives. This is part of an information war intended to stop the flow of material assistance to Ukraine,” the NCOZ report states.

Post-Soviet Criminal Structures in Europe

The report also emphasizes the movement of “post-Soviet criminal structures” into Europe, which could lead to their permanent presence in the Schengen Area, including the Czech Republic. This poses an additional security threat to the region and requires increased vigilance from law enforcement agencies.

Increasing Intensity of Attacks

Otakar Foltýn, the Coordinator of Strategic Communications in the Czech Republic, noted in an interview with ČTK that the Kremlin’s actions are not new, but their increasing intensity poses a significant threat. “Such actions by the Kremlin are not new, but the increase in their intensity represents a threat,” Foltýn emphasized.

Conclusions and Recommendations

Amid growing threats, the Czech Republic and other EU countries must strengthen measures to counter hybrid attacks. This includes enhancing information security, monitoring criminal activity, and collaborating with international partners to share information and coordinate efforts.
