European countries now have new methods to limit Russian citizens’ entry into the Schengen Zone, even if Hungary simplifies its visa procedures. This topic has gained attention following a statement by Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis.
Lithuania Appeals to the European Commission
Lithuania has already approached the European Commission to evaluate Hungary’s decision regarding visa issuance for Russian citizens. Landsbergis noted that the next step could be finding a regional solution to restrict Russian entry into the Schengen Zone.
“There are options. Any EU country has the right to request consultations regarding incoming individuals. In this sense, entry into the Schengen Zone will not be granted automatically; each case will involve consultations with other member states. This, of course, significantly limits the other party and burdens them with bureaucratic procedures, but I just want to emphasize that there are certain solutions,” Landsbergis stated, as quoted by LRT.
New Possibilities for Entry Restrictions
These methods of entry restriction have not been used before because no country has taken actions similar to Hungary’s. However, EU countries can now implement new measures that include more detailed consultations with other member states regarding each individual entry of Russian citizens into the Schengen Zone. This will enable more effective control over the flow of Russians and prevent potential threats.
The Context of Russian Aggression
These new measures are being introduced against the backdrop of ongoing Russian aggression against Ukraine. The conflict, which began in 2014 with the annexation of Crimea and continues to this day, has created numerous challenges for European security. EU countries are compelled to respond to new threats by tightening border controls and introducing new methods of entry restriction.
Ukraine is an important partner for the European Union, and joint efforts to combat Russian aggression are a priority for many European countries. This includes not only military assistance but also diplomatic efforts to limit Russia’s influence on the international stage.
