Despite numerous expressions of gratitude from Volodymyr Zelensky, members of Donald Trump’s administration continue to insist that the Ukrainian president is not “grateful enough” for U.S. support. CNN reported this after fact-checking statements made by American politicians.
According to the outlet, since 2022, Zelensky has repeatedly thanked the American people, Congress, and the U.S. administration for military and financial aid. As recently as February 12, 2025, he once again expressed his appreciation to the U.S. president. After a recent meeting at the White House, he reiterated his gratitude to American partners. However, this did not stop Republican representatives from accusing Kyiv of demanding aid without showing sufficient appreciation.
Trump and the Fox News Narrative: Does America Rule the World?
The debate over Ukraine’s supposed “lack of gratitude” has been amplified by media outlets that traditionally support Trump. Fox News host Jesse Watters made a controversial statement, claiming, “We run the world, and Ukraine is just our proxy,” implying Kyiv’s dependence on Washington. Fox News has repeatedly pushed an isolationist narrative, arguing that U.S. aid to Ukraine is a waste of resources.
Notably, Watters is known for his provocative remarks. He previously stated that the U.S. should “invade Canada” because being part of America is a privilege.
Political Pressure on the Media: The ‘Voice of America’ Case
The pressure on journalists who do not align with the Trump administration’s narrative continues. U.S. presidential envoy Richard Grenell declared that reporters at Voice of America must either support Washington’s policies or step down.
“These are not independent journalists – they are government employees funded by American taxpayers. If they can’t promote official policy, they should find another job,” he stated.
Earlier, The New York Times reported that Voice of America launched internal investigations after publishing articles critical of Trump. One of the outlet’s senior journalists, Steven Herman, was placed on an extended leave during the review.
The growing pressure on independent media and the manipulative rhetoric from Republican politicians reflect a shift in the U.S. political landscape—one that could have serious consequences for continued American support for Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression.
