Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that he proposed financial compensation to Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico in exchange for halting Russian gas imports. However, according to Zelensky, Fico rejected the offer outright, citing his unwillingness to cooperate with Ukraine and the European Commission as his reasons.
“We proposed solutions to address potential losses Slovaks might face from the absence of Russian gas transit, as well as alternative transit options for any non-Russian gas, at the European Commission’s request. We were ready to make it happen. But Fico refused compensation for the Slovaks. He also doesn’t want to collaborate with the European Commission. For some reason, he thinks it’s more beneficial for Moscow,” Zelensky wrote in his statement.
