Russian aggression continues to claim Ukrainian lives not only on the battlefield but also through forced deportations and psychological pressure on abducted citizens. One such victim was 15-year-old Sasha Yakushchenko, who was illegally taken from Kherson Oblast to Russia’s Krasnodar Krai. Feeling hopeless and separated from his mother, the boy tragically took his own life.
The Abduction: How Russians “Care” for Children
Until the fall of 2022, Sasha lived in an orphanage near Kherson, where he was raised alongside six other children. After the region was occupied by Russian forces, the orphanage director began collaborating with the occupiers and organized the forced deportation of the children to Russia. Once in Russia, she renounced guardianship, leaving the children vulnerable and alone in a foreign land.
Sasha was placed with a “foster family” in Krasnodar Krai. However, he was treated as a burden; his new “guardians” openly stated that he was “just living” in their home. Overwhelmed with sadness, Sasha frequently spoke of his dream to return to Ukraine and reunite with his mother.
Psychological Pressure and His Final Days
When Sasha’s foster family learned of his plans to return home, they confiscated his documents, effectively cutting off any chance of escape. Isolated and feeling unwanted, he shared his despair with friends:
“I’m not needed there. They made that clear to me. I’m ruining everyone’s life. I can’t take it anymore—I’ll hang myself. If I didn’t exist, no one would have any problems because of me.”
These heartbreaking words became a chilling prelude to tragedy. On January 10, 2024, Sasha took his own life near the foster family’s home, unable to bear the pressure and loneliness any longer.
Russia’s Crimes Against Ukrainian Children
This tragedy highlights yet again the scale of Russia’s crimes against Ukraine’s civilian population, especially children. The abduction of Ukrainian children, forced deportations, and psychological abuse are part of the Kremlin’s systematic efforts to erase Ukrainian identity.
According to international organizations, such actions by Russia violate the Geneva Conventions and international humanitarian law. Ukraine continues to call on the global community to take a tougher stance against these crimes and hold those responsible accountable.
