Amidst ongoing debates surrounding the proliferation of online casinos in Ukraine, a critical mass of signatures has been garnered on the presidential website in support of a petition urging limitations on the operations of online gambling platforms. The initiative was spearheaded by serviceman Pavel Petrychenko of the 59th Brigade.
In his appeal, Petrychenko emphasized that the issue of gambling addiction extends beyond the civilian population, affecting military personnel who often turn to gaming as their sole coping mechanism for stress. He noted that many soldiers expend a significant portion of their income on gambling activities, resort to microloans, thereby plunging themselves into financial ruin, or even pawn drones and thermal imagers, causing harm not only to themselves but also to their comrades-in-arms.
According to data from the National Bank of Ukraine, Ukrainians collectively spent over 400 million hryvnias daily on online casinos in 2023, totaling more than 12 billion hryvnias per month. These staggering figures underscore the magnitude of the problem and the urgent need for its resolution.
The petition submitted by the serviceman swiftly garnered the requisite number of votes and will now be forwarded for consideration to the president. The decision stemming from this review will determine the future regulatory framework for the gambling industry in Ukraine and safeguard military personnel from detrimental habits.
