Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense has announced the creation of a Space Policy Department, which will focus on developing space forces and satellite technologies to enhance national security. This was stated by Deputy Defense Minister Kateryna Chernohorenko during the Space for Ukraine forum.
According to Chernohorenko, the main tasks of the new department will be to develop satellite systems for military needs, expand early warning systems for potential threats, and monitor space activity. The ministry aims to become the primary customer for Ukrainian space technologies, strengthening the country’s defense capabilities amid the ongoing war.
Space Technologies as a Response to Russian Aggression
Chernohorenko emphasized that satellite intelligence and communication are crucial in modern warfare. With Russia’s continued missile strikes, Ukraine must expand its space infrastructure to improve air defense effectiveness and track enemy troop movements more efficiently.
“Without satellite communication, effective military command is impossible, and without satellite intelligence, it’s difficult to monitor enemy actions and protect the country’s territory,” she stressed.
Ukraine has already successfully integrated space technologies into military operations, particularly through partnerships with international allies and the use of commercial satellites for intelligence gathering. However, establishing its own space forces and expanding national satellite infrastructure will reduce reliance on foreign technology and enhance the country’s defense independence.

Russia actively utilizes its satellite systems to coordinate attacks on Ukraine, disregarding international norms and using space technologies for aggressive warfare. Expanding space forces will not only improve Ukraine’s ability to detect missile launches from Russia but also strengthen its capacity to engage in modern warfare, where technology plays a decisive role.
