In the face of relentless Russian attacks on Ukrainian energy facilities and civilians, American diplomat and former U.S. Special Representative for Ukraine, Kurt Volker, has taken a firm stance: Ukraine must continue actively destroying Russian oil refineries.
In an interview with RBC-Ukraine, Volker emphasized the need for the Russian population to understand the essence of this war. According to him, Russians support Putin because they do not feel the war in their own homes, and this perception needs to change. After numerous acts of aggression, including attacks on Ukrainian energy facilities, destruction of cities, and even the killing of civilians, Ukraine has the right to self-defense.
“People must understand that the war is ongoing. Every day, Russia attacks Ukrainian energy facilities, they attack Kharkiv, they attack peaceful residents, they attack everything. And suggesting that Ukraine should not resist things that strengthen Russia’s military potential – I find it incomprehensible that we are suggesting this,” Volker stated.
As the situation escalates in eastern Ukraine, where Russian aggression is escalating, the need for decisive action by the Ukrainian government becomes increasingly apparent. Volker called for active measures and support from the international community to ensure the security and sovereignty of Ukraine.
The future course of events in the region will be determined not only by the actions of the Ukrainian government and its allies but also by the reaction of the Russian population. There is a slim chance that society will notice the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people and the worsening of life.
