Ukraine Risks Losing Sovereignty While the West Faces a Trust Crisis: Key Challenges in the War with Russia

Western analysts are sounding the alarm: Ukraine risks losing not only its territories but also the trust of its allies if the war ends on terms favorable to the Kremlin. A columnist for The Washington Post highlights that the coming weeks will be decisive for Ukraine. The outcomes will determine whether the country can maintain its sovereignty within its pre-invasion borders or something close to them.

However, the author warns that the worst-case scenario for Kyiv would be a forced resolution of the conflict, involving territorial concessions. Such a move would mark a major defeat for Ukraine, a symbolic victory for Vladimir Putin, and a blow to the reputation of NATO and the United States. The West could lose the trust of not only Ukraine but also other Eastern European allies if it agrees to a deal that effectively legitimizes Russian aggression.

New U.S. Sanctions Target Russian Oil Tankers

Amid growing tensions, the Biden administration is preparing a new package of sanctions aimed at increasing pressure on Russia. According to Reuters, the sanctions will target tankers transporting Russian oil sold above the price cap of $60 per barrel.

Special attention will be given to the so-called “shadow fleet”—aging vessels that Russia uses to bypass restrictions. Financial institutions, including Chinese banks involved in financing such transactions, could also face sanctions.

The goal of these measures is to significantly reduce Russia’s revenues, which the Kremlin uses to fund military operations against Ukraine. Notably, the Biden administration aims to strengthen support for Ukraine before Donald Trump’s inauguration on January 20. The policy of the new U.S. president regarding sanctions remains unclear, raising concerns in Kyiv and among European allies.

Heavy Losses and Uncertainty

Meanwhile, discussions about Ukraine’s actual losses on the battlefield continue. According to Western sources, Kyiv has reportedly suffered around 400,000 casualties, including killed and wounded soldiers, posing challenges for replenishing the Armed Forces. Despite this, Ukraine continues to demonstrate resilience and adaptability in the face of war.

At the same time, Donald Trump’s special representative for Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, has postponed his planned visit to Kyiv. As reported by Reuters, the trip, initially scheduled for early January, has been pushed back to after Trump’s inauguration. This adds further uncertainty to the future U.S. strategy regarding support for Ukraine.

A Pivotal Moment for Ukraine and the World

Ukraine stands at a critical juncture: how to preserve its territorial integrity while avoiding a scenario where the West loses trust by making concessions to the Kremlin. The coming weeks will play a decisive role in shaping the country’s future and the geopolitical stability of the region.
