Donald Trump, following his inauguration as the President of the United States, made bold statements regarding the war in Ukraine. According to him, he intends to end the conflict between Ukraine and Russia “as quickly as possible,” emphasizing that the war should never have started in the first place.
“We will try to resolve this as soon as possible. You know, the war between Ukraine and Russia should never have started,” Trump stated.
He also announced plans to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin soon, saying, “Putin has to make a deal. I think he’s destroying Russia by avoiding an agreement.”
Trump’s Position on Russia: Economic Pressure and Strong Warnings
The new president underlined that Russia would face “serious problems” if the war continues. He suggested that additional sanctions against Moscow could be introduced if Putin refuses to negotiate.
“Look at their economy, look at the inflation in Russia. If Putin doesn’t want to make a deal, he’s only going to worsen Russia’s situation,” Trump added.
At the same time, he stressed that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is eager to negotiate but highlighted that the future depends largely on Moscow’s willingness to cooperate.
Shifting American Diplomacy: The Role of the New Secretary of State
The U.S. Senate has confirmed Marco Rubio as the new Secretary of State, with unanimous support from all 99 senators. This highlights bipartisan unity in addressing foreign policy challenges.
After his appointment, Rubio stated that ending the war in Ukraine would be one of the administration’s top priorities, though achieving it would not be easy. He pointed out that both sides would need to make concessions to reach a resolution.
“This is a complex and tragic conflict that has caused immense harm to Ukraine, Russia, and European stability. The only way to address these issues is by returning to pragmatism and serious diplomacy. The U.S. must play a vital role in this process,” Rubio emphasized.
Staff Overhauls and Strategic Changes
According to journalist Oleksii Bochkal, the Trump administration has initiated a complete “reset” of the Pentagon’s approach to Ukraine. Officials previously responsible for this area have been dismissed, reassigned, or transferred to other roles.
Additionally, Trump has tasked his special envoy to Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, with ending the war within 100 days. However, as reported by The Wall Street Journal, Trump intends to personally oversee the negotiation process.
Diplomacy’s New Challenges
Despite the ambitious statements from Trump and his administration, experts note that the path to ending the war will be far from straightforward. Resolving the conflict in Ukraine presents not only a diplomatic challenge but also a critical test for the United States and its allies.
