Donald Trump’s policy towards Ukraine has unexpectedly become a rare source of cautious optimism for European countries. While his rhetoric on trade wars, control over Greenland, and opposition to the “green agenda” has raised concerns, his stance on the war in Ukraine suggests a potential shift in the U.S.’s approach to Moscow.
According to Politico, in recent weeks, Trump has intensified pressure on Russia, urging Putin to reach a “deal” to end the fighting. The former U.S. president has warned Moscow of severe economic repercussions, including high tariffs, sanctions, and the potential collapse of oil prices if the Kremlin refuses to negotiate.
These statements have triggered an unexpected reaction even among Russia’s traditional European allies. For instance, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who has repeatedly blocked sanctions against Russia, unexpectedly changed his tune. On Monday, he backed down from his hardline stance on extending sanctions against Moscow.
One European diplomat, speaking to Politico, acknowledged that Trump’s return to power could create significant challenges for the EU, but he also noted that when it comes to support for Ukraine, the situation might not be so clear-cut. “I would be lying if I said we’re not nervous about Trump’s return to the White House. We’re preparing for him to cause us a lot of headaches, but one area where I’m cautiously optimistic is Ukraine and NATO,” the diplomat stated.
Trump’s policy remains unpredictable, but his firm rhetoric towards the Kremlin could indicate an effort to use economic pressure to force Russia into making concessions. With the upcoming U.S. presidential elections, the issue of continued support for Ukraine remains a key consideration for the international community.
