Ukrainian forces in the east are facing a severe shortage of personnel due to challenges with mobilization and desertion, weakening the defense capabilities in Donbas. According to The Economist, Ukrainian reserves are running low, and units holding the front line are under constant pressure from Russian forces.

“We are struggling to replenish our losses. The enemy can send a whole battalion to a position we hold with just 4–5 soldiers,” said Colonel Fedosenko, commander of the tactical group in Donbas.

Despite these challenges, Ukrainian troops continue to resist, holding key positions. However, the lack of personnel complicates offensive capabilities and increases the risks for regional defense.
