Russian Disinformation Campaigns: A Growing Threat to Support for Ukraine in Europe

According to a senior German diplomat, Russian disinformation campaigns aimed at undermining support for Ukraine in Europe have significantly increased in scale, sophistication, and stealth.

Ralph Beste, head of the Department for Culture and Communication at the German Federal Foreign Office, emphasized to the Financial Times: “This is a major threat that we must take seriously.”

He stated that countering such efforts is extremely challenging, indicating how far Russia has moved away from the era of infamous “troll farms” that used real people to spread misinformation, often in clumsy and overt ways.

“It’s not just about truthful or false information anymore. It’s something bigger. It’s about distorting opinions. Attempts to change the balance of discussion. Or convince people that the boundaries of debate differ from what actually exists,” explained Beste.

In recent years, disinformation campaigns have become more complex and are no longer driven solely by the dissemination of facts but also by the manipulation of public opinion. This jeopardizes not only trust in information but also the stability of the political landscape in Europe. Addressing this threat requires comprehensive measures to protect the information space and enhance media literacy among citizens.
