In the era of digital innovations, the world is witnessing new technological advancements, which, unfortunately, are not always utilized for peaceful purposes. Recently, journalists at The Wall Street Journal have noted a new trend: cryptocurrency transactions fueling the shadow trade in weapon parts. This clandestine phenomenon is gaining increasing popularity among Russian smugglers, utilizing state-of-the-art technologies and financial instruments.

One of the latest stories uncovered by WSJ revolves around a self-proclaimed Russian smuggler operating in China. According to the publication, this individual received a request from one of the leading manufacturers of the legendary Kalashnikov rifles – a symbol of Russian weaponry. The renowned conglomerate “Kalashnikov” required electric parts for the production of drones, which have become one of the most effective types of armament in countering Ukrainian armored vehicles.

WSJ’s investigation reveals that the smuggler, known as Andrey Zverev, facilitated the funds transfer through a Hong Kong-based electronics distributor, using the cryptocurrency tether. This became a crucial element in the deal between “Kalashnikov” and its supplier.

“Zverev used the cryptocurrency tether to transfer millions of dollars from ‘Kalashnikov’ to its supplier,” WSJ notes.

Recently, the smuggler shared his experience in a Telegram chat with other Russian compatriots, offering them similar services.

“We’ll deliver everything needed for effective warfare against each other,” he wrote. “Ideally, of course, payment in cryptocurrency.”

Journalists emphasize that tether has become one of the most popular payment methods in the dark sphere, confirming the prevalence of cryptocurrency transactions in the modern world.

Thus, this story unveils new challenges faced by law enforcement agencies and international institutions in combating the shadow economy and illegal trafficking of weapons. The use of cryptocurrencies and cutting-edge technologies paves the way for unprecedented forms of organized crime, demanding urgent action from the international community.
