The international community is taking note of Russia’s veto concerning a UN Security Council resolution aimed at preventing the proliferation of weapons in space, including nuclear arms. While 13 members of the Security Council voted in favor of the document, Russia exercised its veto power, with China abstaining from the vote.

The resolution’s draft emphasized that “all states, especially those with significant space capabilities, should actively contribute to achieving the goal of peaceful space utilization and preventing an arms race there.”

Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the United States’ Permanent Representative to the UN, underscored that Russia’s veto may indicate that Moscow is concealing something. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s representative to the UN, Sergiy Kyslytsya, emphasized that the rejection of the project occurred because “war criminals are still allowed to occupy territories of the former USSR as a permanent member of the UN Security Council.”

It’s worth noting that this veto has sparked outrage among UN member states, who have highlighted that such actions could threaten international security and stability.
