Kyiv, Ukraine – In an interview with German television channel ARD, Kyrylo Budanov, the head of the Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR) of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, stated that Russia is preparing for a new offensive in the Donbas region, which could begin in late spring or early summer.

According to Budanov, the occupiers plan to advance towards Chasiv Yar and then move on to Pokrovsk. He noted that no significant changes are expected on the front line until the expected offensive begins.

“The situation on the front line is difficult but controlled,” Budanov emphasized.

Is EU Assistance Being Felt?

Speaking about the joint procurement of artillery shells for Ukraine by EU countries, Budanov said that he does not yet feel their presence on the front line.

“We expect this assistance to be more noticeable in the near future,” he said.

Is a Ukrainian Counteroffensive Possible?

Contrary to the opinions of many experts, the GUR head admitted the possibility of a Ukrainian counteroffensive in 2024, but did not provide details.

“It is possible, but I cannot talk about it in detail now,” Budanov said.

Prisoner Exchange: Is Progress Possible?

Budanov also supported the Pope’s initiative for a “all for all” prisoner exchange but noted that the main thing is to convince Russia.

“I fully support this, let’s do it. There is only one small thing left: to convince Russia,” he said.

The GUR head added that he currently does not see any interest in such an action from Russia.

“The UAE, not Turkey, is now acting as the central mediator for the exchange,” Budanov said.
