Russia Gains Ground: Is Ukraine at Risk of Losing the Edge in War?

Over the course of two intense years of war, Ukraine and Russia are not only engaged in direct combat but also in a fierce ‘battle for adaptation,’ striving to learn and enhance their military effectiveness.

In the early stages of the invasion, Ukraine, with the aid of Western weaponry and mobility, managed to surge ahead. Conversely, Russia faced setbacks, slowing its adaptation due to overconfidence in a swift victory.

However, the dynamics are shifting.

“After two years of war, the battle for adaptation has transformed. The gap between Ukraine and Russia has narrowed,” states Foreign Affairs.

As the war persists, Russia is learning and adapting more effectively, and this could have serious consequences.

Failure to uphold the ‘Budapest Memorandum’ and a reduction in global leaders’ assistance to Ukraine could lead to catastrophic outcomes:

Victory for the aggressor country that violated its international obligations.
Destabilization of the global order.
Escalation of global issues requiring the consolidation of the international community.
Currently, Russia holds the strategic initiative, making Ukraine’s defeat still a plausible outcome.

To prevent this, Ukraine requires:

Consistent and substantial support from the West, including weaponry, finances, and intelligence.
Efficient mobilization and coordination of all national resources.
Development of new, innovative war strategies.
Time is not on our side. Ukraine must act swiftly and decisively to preserve its edge and secure victory in this brutal war.
