Prime Minister of Poland, Donald Tusk, has announced intentions for the country to sign an agreement with Ukraine regarding security support before the upcoming NATO summit in July. Tusk stated that the likelihood of finalizing the document stands at 99%. However, he emphasized the need to strike a balance between supporting Ukraine and maintaining Poland’s own security.
“We will assist because your security is our security, but we will not undertake anything that could weaken our immediate security. This includes fighters and weaponry, which are sometimes as essential for Poland as they are for Ukraine,” he noted.
Tusk underscored that any doubts pertain more to specific wording rather than the overall circumstances.
Meanwhile, Ukraine expressed gratitude for the support from its Polish counterparts during this challenging period for the region. According to Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dmytro Kuleba, collaboration with Poland remains strategically crucial amidst the escalating situation in Eastern Europe.
“We appreciate the support provided by Poland. It sends a significant signal of unity and solidarity in the face of threats from Russia. Together, we will not allow Russia to speak in terms of ultimatums,” stated Kuleba.
Addressing the necessity of reaching an agreement, both Tusk and Kuleba highlighted the importance of a coordinated approach and mutual assistance between the countries to strengthen their security.
