Russia continues to deploy foreign troops as “cannon fodder” in its aggression against Ukraine. According to John Kirby, spokesperson for the U.S. National Security Council, over 1,000 North Korean soldiers were killed or wounded in the Kursk region over the past week.

Kirby highlighted that Russian and North Korean commanders treat these soldiers as expendable resources, sending them on hopeless missions. “This barbaric tactic once again underscores the Kremlin’s disregard for human life,” he stated.

Messages of “Loyalty to the Leader”: Motivation or Coercion?
Among the fallen North Korean soldiers, a note was discovered that vividly illustrates the methods of North Korean propaganda. The document claims that “death is the beginning of eternal glory” and includes instructions on committing suicide to avoid capture.

“The note is filled with propaganda slogans compelling soldiers to choose death over surrender. They are ordered to use a grenade to kill themselves if surrounded,” Kirby emphasized.

This approach demonstrates the total control Kim Jong-un’s regime exerts over its troops, who are sent to the frontlines with the belief that dying for their leader is the highest form of loyalty.

Capture of the First North Korean Soldier: A New Twist in the War
South Korean intelligence confirmed that Ukrainian forces captured their first North Korean soldier. However, the soldier succumbed to severe injuries before receiving medical care. According to the Yonhap news agency, the captured soldier spent three days critically wounded in the field before being taken by Ukrainian forces but did not survive.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in his evening address, noted that Russian forces are using North Korean soldiers as “expendable material.” He added that in cases of surrender, Russian commanders often execute their allies to prevent the leakage of information.

“We’ve captured several North Korean soldiers, but most were in extremely poor condition due to a lack of proper medical care. This once again shows Russia’s disregard for the lives of even those fighting on its side,” Zelensky stressed.

New U.S. Aid Package for Ukraine
Amid escalating hostilities in the Kursk region, the White House announced a new military aid package for Ukraine. John Kirby mentioned that details would be disclosed in the coming days, but he reaffirmed that the U.S. will continue supporting Ukraine in its fight for sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The Crucial Role of International Intelligence
South Korean intelligence confirmed its collaboration with partners, particularly the United States, to monitor the situation. Through real-time intelligence sharing, the presence of North Korean soldiers within the Russian military has been uncovered.
