During a meeting with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized that strengthening Ukraine’s security is crucial for the stability of Europe. According to him, a solution must be found that considers Ukraine’s interests, sovereignty, and the security needs of Europe as a whole.
“We must work closely with the United States and, of course, in our direct engagement with Ukraine to find a solution that respects the interests of Ukrainians, the sovereignty of their country, as well as the interests and security of Europeans. This is the philosophy we intend to focus on,” Macron stated.
Despite Macron’s optimistic tone, pessimistic forecasts about Ukraine’s future in the ongoing war with Russia continue to surface in Europe. For example, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has warned that the West might sacrifice Ukraine, drawing parallels with Czechoslovakia in 1938.
Could Ukraine Face the Fate of Czechoslovakia?
In an interview with the Brazilian newspaper Folha de S.Paulo, Robert Fico expressed his concern that Ukraine might lose a significant part of its territories.
“There will come a moment when the West says, ‘Well, we couldn’t make it work, so we’ll sacrifice Ukraine.’ This could resemble the Munich Agreement of 1938 when Czechoslovakia was sacrificed, forced to cede territories to Nazi Germany. I fear something similar might happen with Ukraine,” Fico said.
According to the Slovak Prime Minister, Ukraine is unlikely to receive tangible security guarantees, such as the deployment of foreign troops on its territory. His words highlight the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the issue of Ukraine’s security amidst its resistance to Russian aggression.
The Munich Agreement as a Historical Warning
The Munich Agreement of 1938 has become a symbol of Western political weakness in the face of aggression. Signed by the leaders of Germany, the United Kingdom, France, and Italy, this document allowed the Third Reich to annex the Sudetenland, leading to the eventual outbreak of World War II. The policy of “appeasing the aggressor” back then resulted in disastrous consequences for Europe.
Today, Ukraine finds itself in a similar position, with its sovereignty and territorial integrity threatened by Russian actions. However, the modern world possesses more tools to prevent such scenarios, thanks to international support and the unity of Western allies.
Why Ukraine’s Security Guarantees Matter to Europe
France, Poland, the United States, and other Western partners have repeatedly stressed that Ukraine’s security is inseparably linked to Europe’s stability. Ukraine’s success in resisting Russian aggression will shape the future of the European security system.
Nevertheless, critics like Fico argue that the current level of Western support for Kyiv may prove insufficient unless NATO countries take more decisive measures. Security guarantees, such as Ukraine’s integration into NATO or the deployment of peacekeeping forces, remain under discussion as the fighting continues.
