Ukraine finds itself under the relentless assault of the “Zircon” hypersonic missile, deployed by occupiers on February 7, 2024, according to the findings of the experts from the Kyiv Scientific Research Institute of Forensic Expertise (KNDISE). The use of this cutting-edge weaponry signals an unparalleled escalation in the risks faced by the civilian population and a dangerous intensification of the conflict.
Director of KNDISE, Alexander Ruvyn, reported that fragments of the missile displayed laser markings of 3M22 and distinctive elements associated with the “Zircon” hypersonic missile. Specific markings were identified on components of the rocket engine and control mechanisms, confirming the application of this Russian innovation.
The “Zircon” is a hypersonic anti-ship guided missile, boasting a claimed range of up to 1500 km and speeds ranging from 8 to 9 Mach. Introduced into service in Russia in January 2023, it represents a new echelon of technological advancement in the Russian military arsenal.
The use of the “Zircon” against Ukraine poses severe consequences, heightening the threat to civilian populations. The disregard for wartime rules by the aggressors, coupled with frequent attacks on residential buildings, underscores the peril of this conflict.
Experts are urging an international response to this act of aggression and the implementation of effective measures to ensure the safety of Ukraine and prevent further escalation of the conflict. Against this backdrop, collaborative efforts within the international community become a crucial element in securing peace and stability in the region.
