In an interview with BBC, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky made several strong statements about Russia’s aggressive policies and its leader, Vladimir Putin. Emphasizing the importance of people for Ukraine, Zelensky highlighted that this does not mean conceding parts of Ukrainian territory. “For us, people are important, but that doesn’t mean we should give away 30% of our territory to the Russians,” he asserted.
Putin as a Pragmatic Aggressor
Zelensky pointed out that Vladimir Putin is a pragmatic yet ruthless leader whose goal is to restore the Soviet Union under his rule. “Who told you they won’t push further? Who said a frozen conflict would work? Putin simply wants to bring back the USSR under his leadership,” the Ukrainian President remarked. He also described Putin as a “pragmatic killer” who, although not personally executing orders, is fully responsible for the brutality and repression occurring in Russia and the occupied territories.
Zelensky emphasized that Putin is driven by a love for power and is willing to sacrifice lives to maintain it. “He is very fond of power, and it’s not very intelligent to cling to everything he can. And he clings to power by the number of tortured and executed people,” the President said.
Prospects for Ending the War
President Zelensky also addressed the potential for ending the ongoing military conflict. He mentioned that Ukraine might attempt to end the active phase of the war by the end of this year. A plan for concluding the war is already being developed, though it does not necessarily mean that all territory will be reclaimed by force. If the second World Summit has a viable plan and Russia is willing to discuss it, Ukraine will be ready to negotiate with Russian representatives. “It doesn’t matter if it’s Putin or someone else. If the world is united around Ukraine, we will talk to those who make decisions in Russia,” Zelensky underscored.
Conclusion
President Zelensky’s statements highlight Ukraine’s determination to defend its territory and not compromise on its national interests. At the same time, the willingness to engage in negotiations if a realistic peace plan is presented demonstrates a commitment to a peaceful resolution of the conflict.
