Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has emphasized the need to explore additional technical capabilities, including engaging neighboring countries’ aviation to counter missile threats from Russia. He believes this could involve forming a coalition of neighboring countries to intercept enemy missiles.
“We need to explore other technical possibilities, including using the aviation of neighboring countries against the missiles that hit Ukraine but are directed towards partner neighbors,” Zelensky stated during his address.
The President acknowledged that this decision might be challenging for partners due to their fear of unnecessary escalation. However, Ukraine is actively working to overcome these concerns. Zelensky has tasked Ukrainian diplomats with initiating discussions with NATO to arrange a meeting of the Ukraine-NATO Council to address this issue.
“I believe this should have been done a long time ago. But I also think there is another tool. I want to try it, so that NATO countries discuss with Ukraine the possibility of a small coalition of neighboring countries to intercept enemy missiles,” Zelensky added.
This initiative reflects Ukraine’s commitment to enhancing regional security and strengthening cooperation with international partners in response to Russian aggression. Involving neighboring countries’ aviation could be a significant step in ensuring the safety of Ukrainian airspace and supporting the civilian population.
Zelensky highlighted the importance of this issue in the context of increasing threats from Russia, which continues its aggressive actions. Ukraine needs effective defense tools, and a coalition with neighboring countries could serve as one such tool.
