Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba has made a significant visit to China, where he met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. The primary topics of their discussion included the ongoing war in Ukraine and potential pathways to achieve a peaceful resolution.
First Visit Since the War Began
This marks the first visit by Ukraine’s Foreign Minister to Beijing since the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The importance of this visit cannot be overstated, as it plays a crucial role in shaping future relations between Ukraine and China and laying the groundwork for cooperation after the conflict ends.
Timing for Strategic Discussions
Igor Tishkevich, a political analyst at the Ukrainian Institute for the Future, notes that such visits are key to establishing a foundation for future institutional cooperation. “This trip will not drastically alter China’s stance or lead President Xi Jinping to fully endorse the ‘Zelensky formula.’ Even participants at the Peace Summit did not achieve this. However, it is extremely important as it may shift China’s position towards greater consideration of Ukrainian interests when discussing potential ceasefire formats,” Tishkevich explains.
Ukraine Ready for Rational Negotiations
Following his meeting with Wang Yi, Kuleba emphasized that Ukraine is open to negotiations with Russia, provided they are rational and focused on achieving peace. He highlighted the current lack of willingness from the Russian side to engage in sincere talks.
Kuleba also pointed out that a just peace in Ukraine aligns with China’s strategic interests as a global force for peace. “Russian aggression has shattered peace and stalled development, with each day of war leading to further humanitarian violations and erosion of justice. Therefore, it is crucial to end the war against Ukraine, restore peace, and accelerate the reconstruction of our country,” Kuleba concluded.
China’s Role in Mediating Peace Talks
After the meeting with Kuleba, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stated that China is ready to act as a mediator in peace talks between Russia and Ukraine. “Although the conditions and timing are not yet ripe, we support all efforts that contribute to peace and are prepared to play a constructive role in ending the conflict and resuming peace negotiations,” Wang Yi said.
He emphasized that all conflicts ultimately end at the negotiating table, underscoring the importance of diplomatic efforts.
