Ukrainian Forces Control Over 1250 km² in Kursk Region: Russian Authorities Ignore the Issue

Ukrainian Armed Forces (UAF) continue their advance in the Kursk region of the Russian Federation, now controlling over 1250 km² of territory and 92 settlements. Despite these significant achievements, Russian authorities have shown a marked disinterest in addressing the growing threat, instead opting to overlook the issue entirely.

President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, highlighted the improbability of such a military operation just a few months ago. “If someone had suggested a few months ago that we would undertake an operation in the Kursk region, many would have deemed it unrealistic, as crossing what is considered the most significant ‘red line’ in Russia. All the so-called ‘red line’ concepts of Russia have crumbled these days somewhere near Sudzha,” Zelensky noted, underscoring the symbolic breakthrough of Ukrainian forces.

However, Secretary of the Ukrainian Parliament’s Defense Committee, Roman Kostenko, points out that the operation in the Kursk region is far from over. The outcome could significantly alter the situation on the front lines, particularly around Pokrovsk.

Russian Government’s Response: From Silence to Calls for Brutality

The Russian government continues to avoid a direct response to the successes of Ukrainian forces, reflecting a disturbing disregard for the plight of its citizens in border regions. Propaganda on Russian television has reached new levels of cynicism: a former State Duma deputy openly called for carpet bombing of the Kursk region, effectively acknowledging that the authorities are willing to sacrifice local residents.

Such statements only confirm the Russian government’s attitude towards its own citizens caught in the conflict. Historical parallels, such as “Moscow Burned by Fire,” become increasingly relevant as Russian leaders repeat the same mistakes as in past centuries.

Operational Situation in Kursk: Ukrainian Troops Continue Their Advance

According to the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW), Ukrainian forces are continuing their advance south of the international border. On August 19, Ukrainian troops achieved new successes near the village of Vishnevk, which is located 14 km from the border. These advances are confirmed by geolocation data released on August 19.

The situation in Kursk is nearing a critical point for Russian military forces. Julian Röpke, an analyst for the German publication Bild, reports that Ukrainian troops have begun demolishing bridges across the Seym River, creating a threat of encirclement for Russian forces in the northern part of the Glushkovsky district. Experts estimate that up to 3000 Russian soldiers may be trapped in the “cauldron,” facing either the choice of defending the area or retreating.

Has Russia Miscalculated? Ready to Sacrifice Its Own?

The successes of the Ukrainian forces in Kursk demonstrate their decisive and systematic approach, yet the Russian leadership seems prepared to sacrifice its own citizens to maintain its aggressive stance against Ukraine. Instead of defending its territory and population, Russia focuses on the destruction of cities in Donbas.

Evidently, Russian leadership considers the loss of border regions less critical than maintaining occupied territories in Ukraine. However, such a strategy may lead to further losses and destabilization within Russia itself.
