Ukrainian forces continue their active offensive operations in the Kursk region, breaking through Russian military defenses and advancing deeper into the aggressor state’s territory. Analysts from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) have confirmed that Ukrainian units carried out a series of mechanized assaults, strengthening their positions and applying additional pressure on Russian garrisons near the border.
Ukrainian Advance: New Positions and Tactical Successes
According to ISW, geolocated materials published on February 6 confirm significant progress by Ukrainian forces. Specifically, the Ukrainian military has taken positions southwest of Makhnovka, as well as to the north and east of Cherkaska Konopelka (Sudzha-Oboyan). The towns of Kolmakov and Fanasyevka are now under Ukrainian control, significantly expanding the foothold for future offensive operations.
At the same time, the intensification of combat in this region is creating serious problems for Russian forces, who are forced to redirect additional units to hold their lines. This diverts resources from other sectors of the front, which could impact the future course of the conflict.
Kremlin Losing Control: Political Implications
Western analysts note that the situation in the Kursk region may force the Kremlin to make radical political decisions. The Telegraph reports that Vladimir Putin may be compelled to accept the loss of several hundred square kilometers of Russian territory in Kursk in exchange for potential concessions regarding Ukrainian territories.
Experts speculate that in the event of a possible deal, which could be proposed by Donald Trump should he win the U.S. election, Russia might agree to withdraw troops from Donbas in exchange for partial sanctions relief. Additionally, the West could fund the region’s reconstruction, which would also be an important factor in negotiations.
Pressure on the Kremlin Intensifies
The loss of positions in the Kursk region and the need to hold off Ukrainian forces at the border are creating serious challenges for Russian military leadership. The successes of Ukrainian troops in this area are not only undermining the morale of Russian soldiers but also showcasing to the international community the weakness of the Russian army, even on its own soil.
Against this backdrop, Ukraine continues to actively work on strengthening its arsenal, particularly through the production of high-precision weapons. More on this can be found in the article: Ukraine Develops New High-Precision Bomb: This Could Be a Turning Point in the War with Russia.
