Ukrainian military and political leaders are expressing hope for the expanded use of U.S. weaponry to strike targets within Russia. According to the Associated Press (AP), the Ukrainian side is seeking to persuade American allies to allow the use of ATACMS missiles against specific Russian targets.
Ukrainian officials claim that only a critical battlefield situation might prompt the U.S. to change its stance on strikes inside Russian territory. The invasion of the Kharkiv region, which demanded significant Ukrainian resources, is seen by observers as a potential precedent for shifting American opinion.
A Ukrainian official, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated: “The decision on ATACMS is likely to change depending on the situation on the ground. I hope that the decision will be made as soon as possible.”
Ukraine has long utilized American weapon supplies, such as HIMARS, to defend its territory and repel Russian aggression. However, ATACMS, with its significantly greater range, could become a crucial tool for striking important military targets in Russia.
American allies provide substantial support to Ukraine, but the use of ATACMS remains uncertain due to concerns about escalating the conflict. Nevertheless, the current situation may alter this position if an urgent need arises on the battlefield to strengthen Ukrainian forces.
