Ukraine Reinstates Visa Regime with Israel in Response to New Regulations

Starting July 1, 2023, Ukraine will effectively reinstate the visa regime with Israel. This move is a response to Israel’s decision to implement mandatory electronic authorization, ETA-IL, for citizens of visa-exempt countries, including Ukraine. This announcement was made by the Ukrainian Ambassador to Israel, Yevgen Korniychuk.

“From July 1, citizens of countries with visa-free regimes with Israel, including Ukraine, must provide documents to obtain ETA-IL authorization for stays of up to 90 days. This requirement essentially nullifies the visa-free regime. In response, Ukraine will introduce similar pre-approval requirements for Israeli citizens,” Korniychuk stated.

This action will primarily affect thousands of religious pilgrims from Israel who visit Ukraine annually, particularly sacred sites in Uman.

The ambassador also emphasized that the specifics of these electronic visas are currently being studied. Despite these changes, Kyiv remains open to dialogue with the Israeli side.

Ukraine Defends Its Interests

This decision by the Ukrainian authorities demonstrates that Ukraine is actively defending its national interests on the international stage. In the context of ongoing Russian aggression, such steps are particularly important to ensure the country’s sovereignty and security. Ukraine is strengthening its position by using diplomatic and administrative measures to protect its citizens and territory.

Impact on Ukraine-Israel Relations

The introduction of the visa regime may affect bilateral relations between Ukraine and Israel. Both countries have deep historical and cultural ties, as well as cooperation in various fields, including the economy, science, and culture. Therefore, it is important that the new visa regulations do not create obstacles for interactions at the citizen and business levels.

Ukrainian pilgrims planning to visit Israel will now also face the requirement to obtain electronic authorization. This could lead to a decrease in the number of tourist trips and limit cultural exchanges between the two nations.

Prospects for Dialogue

The Ukrainian government remains open to dialogue with Israel to resolve this situation. Yevgen Korniychuk emphasized that Kyiv is ready to discuss the conditions and possible exemptions for citizens of both countries. It is crucial for both sides to find a mutual solution that considers the interests of both Ukraine and Israel.

At the same time, this step shows that Ukraine is ready to defend its interests and take appropriate measures in response to the actions of other countries. Amid the constant pressure from Russia, the Ukrainian authorities are striving to ensure maximum security and comfort for their citizens.
