Ukraine has finalized preparations for the second Peace Summit, according to Foreign Ministry spokesperson Georgiy Tykhyi. He emphasized that the country is currently in a strong diplomatic position. However, previously announced timelines for the summit were approximate. Ukraine is prioritizing the quality of the event over speed, as the main goal is to achieve tangible results rather than hosting an event for the sake of it.
Kyiv is actively working to make the summit a platform for implementing peace initiatives and bringing international partners together to counter Russian aggression.
Security Guarantees as a Key to Peace
Ukraine’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Andriy Melnyk, highlighted the importance of security guarantees in ending the war during an interview with the German newspaper Berliner Morgenpost. While NATO membership remains Ukraine’s long-term goal, the issue of temporary security guarantees has become a top priority.
Melnyk stressed that Ukraine is no longer willing to rely on political promises like those in the Budapest Memorandum. “Our partners will need to clearly outline the military measures they will take to defend Ukraine if Russia attacks again,” he stated.
The ambassador noted that such guarantees could be bilateral or multilateral agreements. These guarantees should include firm international commitments from Western allies to defend Ukraine in case of new threats. Furthermore, Melnyk said that international partners could play a key role in any future large-scale peace treaty with Russia.
Ukraine’s Diplomatic Strategy
Ukraine remains focused on engaging international partners in creating a new security system. This is a critical task in the face of ongoing Russian aggression, which continues to threaten stability in Europe. The second Peace Summit is expected to be a significant step in this direction.
While Kyiv seeks to achieve peace as quickly as possible, it prioritizes careful preparation at every stage. This approach aims not only to establish reliable security mechanisms but also to ensure their long-term effectiveness.
