Ukraine Launches First Attack Using Only Drone Systems – ISW

The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reports on an innovative attack carried out by the Ukrainian military near the village of Lyptsi, north of Kharkiv. This marks the first instance where the Ukrainian Armed Forces conducted a combat operation using only unmanned systems.

Instead of infantry, the operation relied on FPV drones, ground-based drones equipped with machine guns, as well as robotic systems for demining and mine-laying. A spokesperson from one of the Ukrainian brigades operating in the Kharkiv region noted that this strategy successfully destroyed enemy positions.

This operation demonstrates Ukraine’s innovative approach to modern warfare. The success of such tactics highlights the growing role of technology in contemporary military conflicts.

Ukraine Trains Military AI for Combat Tactics

Ukrainian developers are actively using artificial intelligence to enhance combat tactics. According to Reuters, the OCHI system has centralized over 2 million hours of video footage from 15,000 drones deployed on the front lines since 2022. An additional 5–6 terabytes of new data are added every day.

According to Alexander Dmitriev, the founder of OCHI, this data helps artificial intelligence to:

  • Learn combat tactics;
  • Identify targets;
  • Assess weapon effectiveness.

Ukraine is also integrating AI for automated demining and controlling drone swarms. This reduces risks to human life and increases the efficiency of military operations. Developers believe that these innovations could play a key role in countering Russian aggression.

Transfer of Air Defense Specialists to Infantry: General Staff Responds

The Guardian previously reported that the General Staff of Ukraine allegedly ordered the transfer of air defense specialists to the infantry due to a severe personnel shortage. The article noted that this affected the effectiveness of air defense and caused tensions with allies, particularly the U.S., which has urged a reduction in the draft age.

The Ukrainian General Staff has denied these claims. The ministry emphasized that professional air defense specialists remain in their positions. However, some specialists who are not directly involved in the maintenance of weapons are being reassigned to other units, including:

  • Security units of the Ukrainian Armed Forces;
  • Rear mobile fire groups;
  • Other services unrelated to air defense operations.

The General Staff stressed that these steps are necessary to optimize resources in the context of active warfare.

Innovation as a Key to Victory

Ukraine is confidently leveraging technological innovations in its war against Russia. From unmanned systems to training artificial intelligence, these measures provide an advantage over the enemy and minimize personnel losses. These achievements underscore the importance of continued support from allies and the ongoing integration of cutting-edge developments.
