The U.S. Never Aimed for Ukraine’s Complete Victory in the War Against Russia: Insights from Time

The American publication Time has shed light on the real position of Washington regarding Ukraine’s war with Russia. According to the report, Ukraine’s outright victory in the conflict was never part of the official goals of the United States. The phrase “as long as it takes,” which the White House often uses to describe its support for Ukraine, was deliberately left vague, revealed Eric Green, a member of the U.S. National Security Council under the Biden administration.

According to Green, Washington never promised Ukraine the return of all occupied territories, including Donbas and Crimea, seized by Russia during its initial invasion in 2014. “We intentionally avoided discussing territorial parameters,” Green stated in his comment to Time. The reason for this decision, he explained, was “simple”: the White House believed that reclaiming these lands was beyond Ukraine’s capabilities, even with substantial Western support.

U.S. Priorities: Ukraine’s Sovereignty

The main objective supported by the U.S., as Green explained, was not the restoration of Ukraine’s territorial integrity but ensuring its survival as a sovereign, democratic nation with the freedom to integrate with the West. This approach has shaped Washington’s strategy of assistance, including military aid, sanctions against Russia, and diplomatic pressure.

This stance raises questions about how closely the long-term interests of the U.S. and Ukraine align. For Ukraine, territorial integrity is a cornerstone of its statehood, while for Washington, the primary concern seems to be maintaining regional stability and containing Russia without escalating into direct conflict.

Context: The Fight for Survival

Russia’s aggression, which began in 2014, escalated further with the full-scale invasion in 2022. Despite receiving massive military aid, including HIMARS systems, Abrams tanks, and Patriot air defense systems, Ukraine continues to face significant challenges on the battlefield. Analysts point out that Western support, although unprecedented, has its limitations, primarily due to NATO’s reluctance to risk direct military confrontation with Russia.

This situation highlights the importance of Ukraine’s internal resilience and exploring alternative strategies to combat the aggressor. However, the ambiguity of U.S. goals in the war may impact the strategic outlook of the conflict, leaving room for varied interpretations.
