In an interview with Bild, Sweden’s Defense Minister Paul Jonsson shared insights on the geopolitical landscape in Europe, emphasizing Ukraine’s pivotal role as a barrier against Russian military aggression.
According to Jonsson, both the Kremlin and President Putin understand that they may lose this war. He highlighted Russia’s interest in political division within the European Union and NATO, underscoring Ukraine’s active role in containing Russian military ambitions.
“I believe that Ukraine today serves not only as a target but also as an active defensive shield against Russia’s aggressive intentions,” he noted. “If this shield falters due to lack of support or willingness to invest adequate resources, the threat to us will undoubtedly increase.”
Jonsson also expressed concerns about Georgia and Moldova, suggesting they too could face heightened threats from Russia.
The Swedish general stressed the importance of unity and cooperation within international alliances to ensure Europe’s security and stability amidst contemporary geopolitical complexities.
