Former NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen has expressed serious concerns about German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s hesitation in supporting Ukraine. In an interview with NTV, Rasmussen emphasized that Germany’s stance might only encourage Russian aggression rather than contribute to a peaceful resolution of the conflict.
“We all remember the months-long discussions about Leopard tanks. Now, the Chancellor is refusing to supply Taurus long-range missiles. I really don’t understand why. This indecision only gives Putin additional incentive to continue the war. I’ve noticed that Chancellor Scholz wants to be seen as a Chancellor of Peace. But I must say, more hesitation will not make him a Chancellor of Peace. On the contrary, it will make him a Chancellor of Eternal War,” Rasmussen stressed.
The importance of supplying weapons to Ukraine cannot be overstated. In a situation where the country is facing an aggressor, every day without additional military support means more human losses and infrastructure destruction. According to Rasmussen, such doubts from the German Chancellor only complicate the situation and make the efforts of Ukrainians to regain lost territories even more bloody.
The Context of Russian Aggression
Russian aggression against Ukraine began back in 2014 when Russia annexed Crimea and supported separatist movements in Donbas. Since then, Ukraine has been in a state of war, which has claimed thousands of lives and caused massive destruction. The international community is trying to help Ukraine, but the indecision of some countries, such as Germany, can hinder effective support.
Taurus long-range missiles can significantly change the situation on the front lines, allowing Ukrainian forces to strike strategically important enemy targets. However, the refusal to supply them only prolongs the conflict and gives Putin the opportunity to continue his aggression without proper resistance.
Conclusion
Olaf Scholz’s hesitation in supplying weapons to Ukraine could have far-reaching consequences not only for Ukraine but for the whole of Europe. A prolonged conflict in Eastern Europe threatens the stability and security of the entire continent. Therefore, the international community must act decisively and effectively to support Ukraine in its fight for independence and territorial integrity.
