Recent reports of increased military equipment production in Russia have sparked intense discussions both in the East and the West. An article in The Wall Street Journal highlights Russia’s capability to churn out tanks, missiles, and projectiles, leaving many analysts overseas astounded while also intensifying pressure on the situation in Ukraine.

Some experts and officials from Western countries have expressed concerns regarding the sustainability of such growth in military production, suggesting that official figures may distort the true picture. According to them, behind the impressive numbers lie issues such as a shortage of skilled labor and a decline in the quality of the produced goods. This could pose a threat of instability, as the expansion of production diverts resources from other sectors of the economy. Should production decrease, Russia may find itself in an even more vulnerable position, heavily reliant on assistance from allies such as China, Iran, and North Korea, journalists point out.

Oscar Jonsson, a researcher from the Swedish Defence University, emphasizes that while Russia has impressively increased production volumes in many defense sectors, caution must be exercised regarding the long-term sustainability of such growth. “While Russia is demonstrating impressive growth rates, it is advisable to refrain from categorical conclusions about its ability to maintain such a pace over an extended period. There is a risk of stagnation,” the researcher says.

This analysis reflects growing concerns and puzzlement within the international community regarding Russia’s military capabilities and their impact on the global political landscape. As Russia continues to bolster its armed forces, the world watches with interest to see the potential ramifications in the long run.
