A dark shadow hangs over the war: news from Luhansk reveals another tragic story. Irek Magasumov, convicted of the brutal murder of an 18-year-old girl during the celebration of his award of the “Golden Star” in August 2023, has returned to the front as a battalion commander.
Magasumov, a native of Tatarstan, received a criminal sentence for killing a young woman in a bar in Luhansk. After the sentencing, which imposed 11 years in a high-security colony and stripped him of the title of Hero of Russia, he retained his military rank. Russian media report that Magasumov had a choice: appeal the verdict and spend additional months in pre-trial detention or accept the decision and return to the front. He chose the latter, signing a contract with the Ministry of Defense.
According to reports, Magasumov has rejoined his unit as a battalion commander, previously holding the position of deputy commander of a brigade. He has been on the front line since July 19. Z-channels have even released a video showing Magasumov allegedly interrogating a captive Ukrainian soldier. His wife Anna confirmed to journalists that it is indeed her husband in the video.
This case further confirms that Russia, despite numerous scandals and criticism, continues to support its “heroes,” even when their actions contradict moral and ethical standards. It is challenging to understand how a country that floods global news with its aggression can produce such “heroes” in times of war.
