The Telegram channel Zigun has published footage allegedly showing the movement of North Korean soldiers in Russia’s Kursk region. Reports of their presence in this area are also being confirmed by Ukrainian military personnel on social media.
According to Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate (HUR), North Korean troops have been placed on high alert. They have reportedly been ordered to await further instructions, likely tied to preparations for assault operations. It is believed that these soldiers were transported to the Kursk region in trucks purportedly carrying water.
First Evidence of North Korea’s Involvement in the War
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in his nightly address, revealed preliminary information indicating North Korean soldiers are participating in Russian offensives in the Kursk region.
“The Russians are integrating them into mixed units and deploying them in operations within the Kursk region. So far, this is their only known area of activity. However, we have information suggesting they might be used in other frontline sectors. Losses among these troops are already becoming evident,” Zelensky emphasized.
‘Friendly Fire’ and Initial Casualties
According to HUR, North Korean soldiers have suffered their first casualties in the Kursk region. Successful attacks by Ukrainian FPV drones have inflicted significant damage on mixed units that include North Koreans.
Additionally, due to language barriers, North Korean soldiers reportedly fired on vehicles belonging to the “Akhmat” battalion by mistake, killing eight Kadyrovite fighters. As of December 14, 2024, the total losses among North Korean troops are estimated at approximately 200, including both wounded and killed.
11,000 Soldiers Under FSB Control
Preliminary data suggests that around 11,000 North Korean soldiers are currently on Russian territory. Strict counterintelligence measures have been implemented in the areas where they are stationed. FSB operatives are reportedly confiscating mobile phones and other devices to prevent information leaks.
The involvement of North Korean troops in Russia’s war against Ukraine underscores the increasingly dire situation on the front lines. The Kremlin is seeking new resources, particularly manpower, to offset the catastrophic losses among its own forces.
