The NATO summit in Washington proved pivotal for Ukrainian security and its Euro-Atlantic aspirations, yielding tangible outcomes. During the meeting, it was announced that by the end of this year, Ukraine will receive state-of-the-art F-16 fighter jets from alliance members such as Denmark and the Netherlands, as highlighted by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, emphasizing the significance of this step towards NATO membership for Ukraine.
The Washington summit was marked by significant declarations of support for Ukraine’s irreversible path towards NATO membership. The primary objective is to ensure stability and security in the face of geopolitical tensions, particularly in the Donbas region and annexed Crimea.
Antony Blinken underscored NATO’s plan to provide Ukraine with a substantial aid package aimed at bolstering its defense capabilities and supporting its journey towards full integration into Euro-Atlantic structures. This approach reflects the alliance’s firm commitment to supporting Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, essential for international order in Europe.
However, let’s return to the issue of the promised F-16s and the ongoing war.
Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the issue of Western F-16 fighter jets for Ukraine remains one of the most pressing concerns. Discussions about these aircraft have been ongoing for a long time, with Western partners promising them at various times—last year, early spring, then late spring—and now the promises have shifted to the end of summer. At a time when Ukrainian cities are under literal barrage of thousands of missiles, with children and adults losing their lives and Ukraine being devastated, these aircraft are desperately needed. Ukrainians pleaded for help as their aviation, capable of defending Ukraine, was dismantled along with nuclear weapons in exchange for promises of protection from the international community. According to the Budapest Memorandum, Russia, Britain, and the US guaranteed security and the inviolability of borders, with a number of countries, including China, committing to assist them.
And now, as all these promises have proven to be a sham, Ukrainians are begging for the skies to be closed, and promises are made to help them with the F-16s, but sometime in the future.
It must be clearly understood that the F-16s are not just weapons.
They are a symbol of the West’s support for Ukraine, a symbol of belief in our victory.
And delaying the delivery of these planes not only harms Ukraine on the battlefield but also undermines trust in Western partners.
It’s time to fulfill the promises and give Ukraine the F-16s!
This is not just a matter of our security but a matter of Europe’s security as a whole.
