In an interview on the program “Tema z Moseichuk,” Mykhailo Podolyak, the advisor to the Head of the President’s Office of Ukraine, dismissed the widespread belief among Western partners that negotiations with Russia could lead to a real peace. He emphasized that hopes for Moscow’s willingness to compromise only strengthen its aggressive rhetoric and may result in new conflicts.
Podolyak stated that Ukraine must defend its sovereignty and should not accept any external proposals that could jeopardize national interests. “It is extremely important for Ukraine to break free from the concept of a provincial state. We must firmly assert our rights and defend them in front of the international community,” Podolyak said. According to him, President Zelensky is already acting in line with this approach, and Ukraine must continue its independent policy, not allowing others to impose their scenarios.
Western illusions and strategic miscalculations
Podolyak believes that Western attempts to influence the situation in Ukraine through “peace plans” and compromises do not take into account Russia’s true nature. He posed the rhetorical question: “Where is it written that Russia will agree to this?” The advisor pointed out that any attempt to offer Moscow peace in exchange for territorial concessions would only encourage it to demand more. Podolyak reminded everyone of the “Russian world” principle: “As soon as we start giving something to them, they immediately declare it’s not enough and demand more.”
Ukraine and the future of the international order
Podolyak argued that forcing Ukraine into any agreement with Russia could set a dangerous precedent for other aggressors. He cited North Korea as an example, noting that Russia’s victory over Ukraine could push Pyongyang to take more aggressive actions against South Korea. “The world would witness a surge in territorial conflicts because countries like Russia are not ready for diplomatic compromises. Their approach is force and an attempt to change borders by military means,” Podolyak remarked.
Podolyak’s statements highlight that only active international support for Ukraine and recognition of the country’s independent stance can prevent further escalation of the situation in Europe and beyond.
