French President Emmanuel Macron is hopeful of achieving a ceasefire during the upcoming Summer Olympics in Paris. But is such a feat possible?
Speaking to the press, Macron stated, “We will be working towards an Olympic truce,” adding that he will “seek assistance” from Chinese President Xi Jinping, whom he is slated to meet, to garner support on this matter.
This initiative extends beyond Ukraine, encompassing other hotspots of conflict such as Gaza, Sudan, and more.
In March, Macron had previously indicated that France would propose a cessation of hostilities in Ukraine during the Olympics. In response, the Kremlin stated it had not received such proposals but is willing to consider them “based on the interests of the Russian Federation and the situation in the conflict zone.”
The 2024 Olympics will run from July 26 to August 11, drawing global attention as the prospect of a peaceful sporting event in Paris could significantly alter conflict dynamics worldwide.
Given the substantial influence of the Olympics on the international stage, Macron’s plan is already sparking discussions and reactions from various countries and experts. Can this initiative truly bring about peaceful results, or is it merely a political maneuver?
