Renowned Ukrainian tennis player and active member of the SBU “Alpha” special forces unit, Sergey Stakhovsky, recently shared profound insights into the psychology of Russian combatants returning from the Avdiivka sector.

In a candid interview with УП (Ukrayinska Pravda), Stakhovsky shed light on the intriguing behavioral patterns observed among Russian fighters. His observations delve into the intricacies of fear, aggression, and the herd mentality that seem to shape the actions of these individuals on the battlefield.

“Russians alone are fearful individuals. However, when they are in a group of five with automatic weapons, they become capable of committing acts of violence and assault,” Stakhovsky disclosed.

Drawing upon his experiences as a professional in a special forces unit, Stakhovsky emphasizes the herd instinct prevalent among Russian fighters. He paints a vivid picture of how, when in the minority, they appear “pathetic and scared,” but the dynamics change drastically when their numbers increase, accompanied by weaponry.

“Interestingly, if you take them one by one, they are terribly pitiful and frightened. But when there are five of them with firearms, they will kill anyone – children, women. They are indifferent. This herd force is strongly felt in them,” explains Stakhovsky.

Highlighting the impact of numerical strength on the psyche of Russian combatants, he concludes, “Alone, they feel vulnerable and exposed. Yet, as soon as their numbers grow, and weapons are at their disposal, they perceive themselves as fearless.”

Stakhovsky’s profound observations provide valuable insights into the psychological aspects of the conflict, offering a deeper understanding of the interplay between fear, aggression, and group dynamics. This information not only contributes to the comprehension of events on the front lines but also serves as a critical analysis of the evolving mindset amidst the backdrop of ongoing military conflicts.
